You are buying a seat, a view and ninety minutes. The boat leaves the quay at Market Square, runs out past the South Harbour and the Old Market Hall, crosses the ferry lane, shows you Suomenlinna’s walls from the water, threads the narrow channels between the small islands, passes the villas and the boathouses on the inner shore, and turns for home along the cathedral fronts. Then it ties up where it started.

That is the product. It is not island hopping, it is not a ferry, and it is not a way of reaching a museum. I say that first because people used to arrive at my kiosk furious about it, and the fury was always avoidable.

Who it is genuinely good for

People with ninety minutes and no more. People who want the city front from the sea, which is the angle Helsinki was built to be seen from and the one you cannot get on foot. Cruise passengers with a short call — see the cruise port page. Anyone who would rather sit than walk. Anyone travelling with a child who has run out of walking, which is most children by the middle of the afternoon.

It is a poor choice if you want to set foot on an island, if you want a bar and the late light (take the evening cruise), or if sitting still for an hour and a half is your idea of a wasted afternoon (take the RIB).

Local tip

Get on early and take a seat on the sundeck on the side facing the open water, then keep your coat on for the first ten minutes even if it feels silly on the quay. The deck empties as soon as the boat leaves the shelter of the islands, and the people who stay out are the ones who dressed for it. The gulls at Market Square will take food off a terrace table; they will also take it off a plate on deck.
